With the summer season ending, the Grayshott Strikers were delighted to start playing in the Surrey SMASH IT indoor softball cricket league, running weekly from September to December.

The indoor competition, run by Surrey County Cricket Club, included teams from Churt, Grayshott, Grayswood, Farnham and Frimley Phoenix.

Over the course of the league, each week teams played matches round-robin style, achieving up to eight points per match, to finish the league and play in finals week to decide the overall winner.

After some hard-fought matches, going into finals week, Grayshott led the table followed by Grayswood, Churt, Frimley Phoenix and Farnham.

In the first semi-final, the Strikers took on Frimley. With both teams channelling everything they’d learnt about indoor cricket, it was a close match and a nervous few minutes for both teams awaiting the result.

With a final result of 61 to 43, the Strikers were through to the final.

In the other semi-final, Grayswood played Churt for a place in the final against the Strikers.

There was some great cricket in the match, with both teams playing their hearts out. Grayswood took the win to get to the final.

After an exciting play-off, Churt edged out Frimley.

In the final, in a rare event, the Strikers won the toss and elected to field first.

The match got off to a brilliant start for Grayshott, taking four wickets in the first two overs.

At the end of their batting, Grayswood had set a healthy target for the Strikers.

It was a tense match for the spectators as the Strikers took every opportunity to score runs and Grayswood did everything to restrict the play.

It all came down to the last over, which included some great bowling and batting. With the last ball bowled, both teams anxiously awaited the result.

With the scores counted and verified, Kat Wells from Surrey County Cricket Club, announced the Strikers as the winners of the women’s Surrey SMASH IT 2022.

Over the eight-week tournament, the Strikers had 16 players taking part, all of whom contributed to the final win – Al, Ann-Marie, Becca, Cadence, Cath, Charlie B, Charlie W, Elly, Jenn, Kirsty, Lisa, Louise, Nicky, Sophie, Sonia and Trace.

Al Grant said: “We’ve all loved playing in the indoor tournament.

“The win was very much a team effort from everyone who played and supported us throughout.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Kat for all her hard work and patience in running the league, and congratulations to all the teams who took part.”
