ON the final I’Anson Division One day of the season, there were wins for Dogmersfield and Alfold. Tilford drew with Wrecclesham and the local derby between Headley and Grayshott also ended in a draw.
Both sides enjoyed 100-run partnerships at Tilford. The unlikely pairing of Geoff Coombe and Hamish Macdonald put on 147 for Tilford’s first wicket.
Coombe, who had made his highest score of 79 the Sunday before, took full advantage of his elevation. The 100 came up in the 25th over and Coombe was just three short of his maiden century when, having just hit a six, he was undone by a good ball from Sam Greensit. He hit ten fours and five sixes and his 97 came off 92 balls.
The supportive Macdonald went soon after for 48, a first victim for Joe Boniface who took 5 for 33 as wickets tumbled in the quest for quick runs and the home side declared on 197-6 after 45 overs.
Wrecclesham, missing several regulars, lost three wickets for 15 before Chris Windeatt and Dom Lion staged a fine recovery. Tilford, hindered by an injury to Jake Austin, had to call on occasional bowlers, including the ambidextrous Chris Wilson, and the pair rattled up 100 in just 17 overs before Mark Ramesar trapped Lion for 63.
Windeatt was to finish 75 not out as Wrecclesham saw out time safely at 165-6. A good finish to the season for two teams who managed to just stay clear of the relegation zone.
Disciplined bowling by Grayshott and a dead Headley wicket produced a low-scoring, but hardly light-hearted final game. Grayshott were dismissed for 143, but this soon looked a good score as Headley struggled, eventually toiling to 94-8 in 51 overs.
Young opener Ravi Sriharan was the only batsman to show any fluency on the day. He and Andy Wheble enjoyed some luck in an opening partnership of 65 for the visitors and Sriharan scored 43 before he was dismissed by Paul Jarmain.
His knock was put into context as the remaining eight wickets fell for 58, with stand-in skipper Joe Randall taking 6 for 31. A catch for Ashley Cook gave him the highest number of dismissals for a keeper in the top division.
The accurate seamers of first-change Danny Brown were ideally suited to the pitch and Headley ground to a standstill against him and Cam Oosthuizen.
It was a key moment when opener Stuart Smith was dropped. Oosthuizen picked up 5 for 22 in 11 overs, including Smith for a match-saving 41.
Brown fittingly bowled the final over and ended up conceding a miserly 16 runs off his 14 overs.
Alfold beat relegated Pirbright by 47 runs. Ian Milton (3-37) and Aman Khan (4-29) reduced Alfold to 36-4 before Simon Bannister (55) and Tim Pullen rallied their side with a stand of 87.
Set 137 to win, Pirbright started well enough, only to collapse from 46-1 to 89 all out. Old stagers Pullen (5-18 in 11 overs) and Neil Piper (4-45) did the damage on a helpful wicket.
Dogmersfield also staged a strong fightback as they posted 182 all out at Hollowdene. Jack Richards and Ray Clarke ripped through the top order, but the pairing of Nadir (67) and Samad Ayoubi (58) turned things around with an aggressive partnership.
Sam Farncombe (43) and Richards put Frensham in a winning position, but a late collapse to Imran Abbas (5-14 in 6 overs) left the home side all out for 141.
