BOURNE Club first team continued their excellent form with a fourth win out of five matches in Division 4b of the Surrey Cup.
Bourne were missing their number one for a tough fixture away to Woking 2, yet came through with a 4-1 victory.
Kevin Ryan, promoted to number 1, got the team off to a great start. In a hard-hitting match against Nick Thomson, he lost the first, but quickly reeled off the next three to win 3-1.
Number 3 Richard Housley gave a dogged performance against an opponent who usually beats him. This time, Housley defeated Mike Wardle 3-1.
So, leading 2-0, could Bourne seal the victory? Returning after a six-month lay-off, Steve Jackson was filling in at number 5 and did not disappoint. Against Dave Wallond, a former nationally ranked player, he reeled off a straight-sets victory to ensure a team win.
Richard Hargreaves, playing at 2, had probably the best win of the night. He was up against a young and mobile opponent in Rob Heasman, but the quality of Hargreaves’ shot-making overcame the fitness gap and he squeezed home in the fourth.
Mike Perring (4) had the most thankless task against an awkward opponent in Steve Sheffield. After winning the first, an increasingly frustrated Perring went down 3-1.
However, the overall victory keeps Bourne on track for promotion.
