Farnham Town extended their unbeaten run in the National League South to three games with a 1-1 draw at Hemel Hempstead Town last Saturday.

But it could easily have been a third successive victory for Farnham, with chances going begging and a soft goal conceded shortly after scoring a fine one of their own.

Hemel had the first opportunity on their artificial pitch at Vauxhall Road, a corner nodded down for a swivel and shot beaten away by Farnham keeper Mike Eacott.

Jack Spong won the ball for Farnham and Darryl Sanders played a beautiful through pass which sent Rakish Bingham clear. Owen Dean called for a square ball but Bingham tried to take it round Hemel keeper Michael Johnson, who touched it behind for a corner.

Farnham’s Bobby-Joe Taylor floated in a cross and Ryan Kinnane toe-poked a half-volley just wide. Hemel then had a corner from which Charlie Rowan headed over.

Farnham scored a brilliant team goal on 35 minutes. Mat Mackenzie intercepted the ball and it was picked up by Billy Clifford, who played it across to Sanders on the left. He collected the pass 30 yards out and sent a diagonal ball back to Clifford, continuing his run into the right side of the box.

Clifford dragged the ball across David Sesay with his right foot and curled a left-foot shot towards the top corner that Mackenzie headed past a defender on the left post from two yards.

Hemel’s George Williams fed Devante Stanley, his cross was headed on by Remaye Campbell and Eacott blocked Josh Steele’s volley from two yards.

Two minutes into first-half stoppage time Marshall Francis clipped it in from the left, Eacott came for it but did not get there, and Steele looped a header over him and against the bar before nodding home the rebound.

In the second half Taylor, Clifford and Owen Dean set up Bingham but his shot from a narrow angle was saved by Johnson’s legs as the offside flag went up.

Taylor then chased down defender David Longe-King, nicked the ball and went round Johnson on the edge of the box before squaring past Sanders to Owen Dean, whose shot was cleared at the foot of the post.

Campbell headed wide from six yards, Taylor had a 30-yarder turned past the post by Johnson, Stanley’s header was gathered by Eacott and finally Johnson saved Owen Dean’s header on the line before smothering it in a scramble.
