Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson was frustrated after defensive mistakes cost his side in their 4-2 defeat at home to Billericay Town in the National League South.

Sam Evans and Darryl Sanders were on target for the Town, but goals from Charlie Ruff (2), Macauley Bonne and Taylor Clark gave the visitors all three points in front of a crowd of 1,015 at The Memorial Ground.

“It was a strange and frustrating afternoon,” said Johnson.

“Billericay counter-attacked us quite a lot – we were making stupid errors that were getting us caught on the counter.

“We got in front and we thought we would cut the errors out and be in control of the game, but then we've had a crazy ten minutes where the defending was abysmal.

“Charlie Ruff was running the show for Billericay. We decided to step off him and he dictated what he wanted to do with his passes.

“I’m really disappointed, especially as the message was to go tight and they kept dropping off.

“It happened pretty much all game – it was the same over and over again.

“I let them know at half-time it wasn't good enough, but I felt we were in the game and could turn the game around.

“We scored one of the goals of the season, but it counts for nothing because we couldn't follow on from it.”

Johnson was also frustrated by the display of referee Robert Ablitt after two key incidents in the game.

“I think there's two big moments in the game,” said Johnson.

“Billericay’s striker has got to get a red card for the elbow across Louie Holzman's head. The linesman was five yards away from it.

“Louie’s eye has closed up. Hopefully there’s nothing broken – we may need an X-ray to determine that.

“For the goal at the end – the sucker punch to make it 4-2 – the referee has run in front of Jack Spong and stopped him from getting the ball, and Billericay have gone through and scored.”

Farnham suffered a blow before the match when Brandon Mason pulled out of the starting line-up in the warm up.

“Brandon felt the top of his thigh at Slough,” said Johnson.

“During the week he thought he was alright. He felt okay but then as he opened up with the balls he could feel it a little bit, so we thought we wouldn't risk it.”
