FARNHAM Town boss Luke Turkington is urging his players to “enjoy the occasion” when they travel to the Channel Islands to face Jersey Bulls today.
The battle of the big guns pits first against third in Division One of the Combined Counties League as Farnham look to become the first team this season to take points off the rampant Bulls.
Jersey, who play on an artifical surface at the Springfield Stadium, have won all 16 of their league games so far this season, already smacking in an astonishing 64 goals while conceding just five.
Last Saturday, while Farnham had their nine-game unbeaten run ended by AFC Hayes, the Bulls were running amok as they destroyed Cove 7-0 – a scoreline that matched Town’s victory at Cove earlier in the season.
And such is the prominence of both the fixture and Jersey’s meteoric rise, which already is beginning to mirror that of neighbouring island Guernsey, that the tantalising fixture has even captured the attention of Sky TV, whose cameras will be at the Springfield Stadium for the game.
Turkington, who was part of the Camberley Town side who famously inflicted a rare defeat on Guernsey seven years ago, said: “It’s an experience, the boys need to enjoy the occasion and enjoy the moment because it won’t come around that often.
“It will live long in the memory of some of these boys. I’m smiling on the inside because I know how much some of these boys are looking forward to it, I just hope they do everything they can on the pitch for 90 minutes and play the game not the occasion.
“Win, lose or draw, and I wouldn’t usually say this, but we’re on the island, we might as well make the most of it, let’s go out and enjoy the whole occasion. But we’ve got a job to do first and that’s to win the game.”
Having had the chance to see Jersey play three times this season, the Town boss is in no doubt as to what sets apart the islanders, who already have a 17-point lead at the top, from the rest of the sides in the division.
“They are the most organised and disciplined team that I have come across,” he said, “so there’s no wonder that they are unbeaten.
“Going away from home the odds are stacked against us. It’s David versus Goliath, but we can do it.
“But their organisation, their discipline, in terms of where they need to be, their patterns of play, their set plays, everything about them is superb.
“They have been well drilled, they look like a side that has been together for five years, we look like a side that has been together for five months.
“It’s one game and it will be nice to try to be the first team to take points off Jersey.”
Today’s game at the Springfield Stadium in the capital St Helier kicks off at 3pm.
