Harry Bater produced a magnificent century as Alton claimed 16 valuable Southern Premier Cricket League Premier Division points from a hard-fought draw against Sarisbury Athletic at Jubilee Playing Fields.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Alton recovered from an uncertain start thanks to a superb innings from opener Bater. The right-hander displayed patience and control throughout his 152-ball knock of 104, striking ten boundaries as he guided his side towards a competitive total.

After Abhay Gonella (15) and Olly Boulton (four) fell early, Bater rebuilt with Alex Corbett (30) before sharing another important partnership with Jude Wright, who made 41. Scott Myers then added impetus with an aggressive 45 from just 36 balls, while Fred Egleston contributed a useful 15.

Alton looked well placed before the innings ended in extraordinary fashion. Sarisbury seamer Connor Clark dismissed centurion Bater before removing Tom South and Bash Walters with the next two deliveries to claim a hat-trick. Although Joshua Williams accounted for Egleston, Clark returned to bowl Dan Sumner and finish with outstanding figures of six for 41 as Alton were dismissed for 268 in the 64th over.

Sarisbury’s reply was built around Joe Baker’s composed 73, while Nathan Feltham and Sam Cooper both made 38 to keep the visitors in contention.

Alton stayed in the contest through disciplined bowling. Zach Gadsby claimed the opening wicket before Bash Walters removed Cooper and Joshua Williams in quick succession. Boulton then struck twice, dismissing Baker and Jordan Wright to reduce Sarisbury to 193 for seven and give the hosts hope of forcing a victory.

However, Rob Franklin (18 not out) and Clark (22 not out) batted resolutely through the closing stages to steer Sarisbury to 236 for seven from 57 overs and secure the draw.
