JAMES Boyman, riding for Farnham Road Club, made it a clean sweep in the three open events organised by Alton CC/Owens Cycles this summer. He rounded off the season by taking the men’s senior 25-mile title on the H25/8 A31 course.

Boyman had already picked up the main prizes in Alton’s previous two open events, the Hilly 50k in April and the Open 10-mile in June.

His time of 51mins 01sec may have been a little disappointing from a personal point of view, as he had only recently recorded a personal best 49-20 when winning the North Hants RC’s equivalent competition in mid-August, but it was enough to show a clean pair of heels to runner-up Michael Stafford (54-41) of Portsmouth North End and third-placed Alan Spurden (55-09) of Andover Wheelers.

Spurden’s one-second advantage over Rick Froud (55-10) nudged the in-form Alton CC rider off the podium into fourth place.

The ladies’ honours went to Julie Chasin of Kingston Wheelers CC with her 1-03-59 and the only junior entrant, Peter Butler of Charlotteville CC, recorded 1-12-29.

Fifty-five riders competed in the event which was organised by Rob Neville on behalf of the Alton club. Kathy Collard-Berry and Chris Thomas of a3crg looked after the timekeeping and several Alton members volunteered for setting off, marshalling and refreshment duties.
