In true British fashion, Chawton Parish Council didn’t let a bit of rain spoil its coronation street party on Saturday – it simply moved the celebration a few yards into Chawton Village Hall.

The hall was festooned with Union Flags and red, white and blue balloons to get everybody in a happy and patriotic mood.

Villagers wore red, white and blue for the event, which ran from 4pm to 7pm. People brought picnics and the council provided tables and chairs. There was music, entertainment and a bar. Children wore home-made crowns to be judged in a competition.

Parish councillor Ilena Allsopp said: “We had a turnout of more than 130 people despite the weather and it was hugely enjoyed.”
