A Petersfield woman with a heart as soft as wool has sewn up a place in the town’s Coronation celebrations.

Lorraine Bird is cut from a different cloth as the “yarn-bomber” is responsible for this royal addition to the post box on Dragon Street.

The stunning crown and cushion box-topper is the latest in a series of knitted designs the grandmother has produced over the last year.

And she doesn’t do it for money or recognition – she just wants to spread a bit of joy to passing shoppers and Petersfield Infant School pupils.

She said: “I have knitted and crocheted since I was very young and it’s been a family thing.

“When I was looking around in lockdown I picked it up again and got the idea for a topper because the one near my mum and dad’s house in Cosham always has one.

Lorraine added: “It’s about the eleventh topper I’ve done as I’ve got a list of what’s coming up, so I’ve just taken the Easter topper down.

“The crown was a bit of a fiddle. I remember thinking ‘I don’t want to do this again’ and it took me about a week to finish.”

The serial knitter from Barham Road has already got the next design lined up but she’s keeping tight-lipped about her 12th box-topper.

She said: “The children at the Between Club at the pavilion loved the cake one on New Year so I asked them for ideas. You’ll just have to wait and see.”
