A teenager co-accused of murdering a Farnham student in a Surrey park has told a court he planned to rob his victim at knifepoint because he wanted to ‘make some money’.

The Luis Guembes murder trial continues in Guildford with the two defendants accused of fatally stabbing the 15-year-old on January 19 giving their side of the story.

The second defendant told Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday that he wanted Luis’s phone after his own broke.

He accepted the plan was to rob Luis, but did not intend to hurt the All Hallows Catholic School student.

Under questioning from Tim Forte KC, the accused 16-year-old told the jury he first met Luis through a mutual friend and went with him and others to explore an abandoned site at Foxenden Quarry.

He said Luis threw his friend’s bag against the wall, breaking a phone in the process, and never repaid the £40 costs respite many requests, although Luis allegedly offered to “help him rob someone else” in return.

Defendant 2 told the court he decided in early January to rob Luis, saying the broken phone gave him “a reason”.

He wanted money and expected Luis to hand over his phone if threatened with a knife, discussing the plan with friends with Defendant 1 being “up for the cause” and the pair making plans for a knifepoint robbery the week before the incident.

Defendant 2 said he considered carrying out the robbery over the weekend before opting for Monday, January 19. It’s been claimed that Defendant 1 knew about the plan and had agreed to help, although he denies this.

The court heard Defendant 2 took his father’s bushcraft knife because he wanted to threaten Luis and thought it would look frightening, and knew Defendant 1 had an ‘ornamental’ knife, having seen it at his home address before the incident.

Describing the meeting at in the Wildwood area of Stoke Park, Defendant 2 said he and Luis greeted Defendant 1, with the latter asking Luis to hand over his phone.

Defendant 2 said he showed Luis the knife from his waistband and demanded the phone. He claimed to the jury that Luis punched him in the head several times, after which he dropped the knife.

Defendant 2 described the pair grappling and said he was trying to get the phone, not hurt Luis.

He said he later saw Defendant 1 making “swinging movements” in his peripheral vision, in an attempt to get the phone. He recalled seeing blood on Luis’s face, but said the victim was standing when he left.

Asked who started the fight, Defendant 2 said: “On the one hand I threatened Luis with a knife, on the other he punched me first. So it depends on how you look at it.”

Defendant 2 has denied stabbing Luis, using a knife during the confrontation, and making a confession, but has pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and conspiracy to rob.

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to murder, the trial continues.
