A green-thinking group from Petersfield has completed a towering bid to help a beloved bird ahead of a week dedicated to the species.

Petersfield Climate Action Network (PeCAN) will mark the start of Swift Awareness Week by holding an event at St Peter’s Church this Saturday (June 28).

The good cause has teamed up with Hampshire Swifts to give people the chance to learn more about the wonderful migratory birds.

People who visit between 10am and 1pm can view the recently installed swift boxes in the church tower and learn how to get their own at home.

It’s part of PeCAN’s “Swift Streets for Petersfield” project that has seen more than 120 boxes installed around the town since its April 2023 launch on Penns Road.

St Peter’s Eco Club will provide crafty swift activities for children in the meeting room and refreshments will also be available within the church.

“PeCAN will also be able to tell you where you can celebrate swifts with a pint of Bowman’s Swift One beer at a selection of local pubs,” said a spokesperson.

Hampshire Swifts charity trustee Catharine Gale will also outline the incredible life history, migration patterns and current status of the birds during a free talk on Monday.

The talk will start at 7pm in United Reformed Church Hall, to book a free place visit https://shorturl.at/48HYM
