HASLEMERE Border Athletic Club had a squad competing in the 37th Fleet Half-Marathon, the event having been rescheduled after being snowed off in March.
Hosted by Fleet & Crookham AC, the race has a strict three-hour cut-off time for runners to complete the course.
The Border runners, led by club chairman Robert Monteath, achieved some close packing and the first man to finish was Dom Perkins in a time of 1hr 47mins 11secs. Rupert Hollom also beat two hours with 1-56-10 and Lisa Blayden, the first Haslemere lady home, was close on his tail with 1-56-17.
Steve King was delighted to finish 13 seconds over the two-hour mark, having ‘lost his mojo’ some weeks ago, and he and chairman Monteath crossed the line together in the same time.
Haslemere Border’s own Gibbet Hill 10K Race takes place on Wednesday, July 11 (7.30pm start) and will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It follows a challenging, multi-terrain route, near the spectacular Devil’s Punch Bowl. The race gets its name from the infamous murder of a sailor in 1786. The two men responsible were caught and hanged at the high point of the race’s route.
Entries to the race are accepted on the day, as long as the maximum capacity of 250 runners has not been reached. Book early to avoid disappointment. www.gibbet10K.co.uk
