Hockley’s Tom Chalk won the Hampshire U14 Championship at Alresford Golf Club, racking up 33 points in the stableford to win by three from North Hants junior Daniel Edes.
Chalk got to the turn in three over par, but picked up a net birdie at the long fifth with a four on the hardest hole on the course’s stroke index.
The second hardest hole at Alresford is the 11th and a run of five consecutive pars followed by a net birdie at the 437-yard par-four 12th saw Chalk marking out a decent score.
The four-handicapper’s birdie three at the 15th bumped up his total and three more pars completed the back nine in level par to finish three over.
Daniel Edes had a purple patch around the turn, making a birdie at the eighth and a net eagle at the ninth before recording a two at the par-three 10th to pick up 10 points in three holes.
Two bogeys and one double on the back nine ended the 10-handicapper’s chance of catching Chalk, but he bounced back with a net birdie on the 14th and made a birdie four on the 17th for his second net eagle of the day.
But that was still only good enough for sixth place in the handicap prizes.
The Army’s Ben Rose, had a day in the sun playing off 29 – his total of 41 points held off Barton-on-Sea’s Joshua Randall, playing off 19, on countback, and Stoneham’s Sam Talbot, who had the same total, playing off 16.
Rose had nine net birdies and a net eagle on the 12th, and only failed to score on two holes as he finished five under.
Randall had 10 net birdies, while Talbot had two net eagles and six net birdies. Talbot was fifth in the scratch competition.
