THIRTY-EIGHT young members took part in Farnham Golf Club’s Junior Captain’s Day last week.

This is the culmination of the junior section’s season and features competitions during the day, followed by a meal and the annual prize-giving.

Juniors of all abilities competed and those with CONGU handicaps played a medal for the Junior Captain’s Trophy. This was won by Adam Holmes with a net 66, on countback from Luca Mosca, with Will Wharton a shot behind in third place.

The Texas Scramble, for those with club handicaps, was won by the girls’ team of Scarlett Porter, Hannah Link and Milly Woad, captained by ‘honorary girl’ Simon Link.

Luke Bone, club professional and head of junior coaching, held a series of skills challenges on the short-game area for the younger juniors. The winners were Imogen Chappell (putting), George Howell (bunkers) and Bobby Varney (chipping).

The 2017 trophies were presented by Luke Bone. The Junior Championship Trophy went to Lottie Woad, the first girl in the club’s history to take the title.

The season-long Junior Order of Merit and Eclectic Cup were also won by Lottie. The Most Improved Junior award went to Luca Mosca, who reduced his handicap by 16 shots, and the two Duff Ross Trophies for the Junior Academy Boy and Girl of the Year were won by George Stout and Hannah Link.

Junior captain Eddy Williams is succeeded by Archie Walker, with Scott Barham being the new vice-captain.

The inaugural Triangular Series Trophy was re-presented to the entire Farnham-winning squad of Eddy Williams, Lottie Woad, Archie Walker, Scott Barham, Daniel Edes, Charlie Chilcott, Adam Holmes, Stanley Platt, Josh Strauss, Caleb Strauss, Thomas Skevington and James Howell.

Farnham’s vibrant junior section currently has 75 members, aged from six to 17 and ranging from beginners to those with plus handicaps.

Luke Bone holds group coaching sessions every weekend and twice weekly evening clinics in the club’s impressive new swing studio. Many juniors also have regular individual lessons with the pro and his assistant, Ollie Lewis.

Farnham Golf Club is certainly doing its bit towards ‘Growing the Game’.

... and Seniors aren’t doing badly

MORE success for Farnham Golf Club Seniors who have won the John Ling Trophy – a Surrey inter-club knockout competition.

After battling their way through five rounds, Farnham met Dulwich & Sydenham, the 2011 winners, in the final at West Byfleet GC.

With handicaps quite evenly matched, it always looked like being a close-run thing. Dulwich took the first two games, but Farnham fought back to take the third and final matches, leaving the ongoing fourth to decide the result.

One up playing the 18th, Farnham needed just a half to clinch the trophy. However, the pairing of Mike Tiddy and Peter Dudley-Hammatt finished in style, with Tiddy holing a monster birdie putt on the par-five to win two up and seal an overall 3-2 victory.

To round off the day, John Ling was himself there to present the trophy.

During the competition, Farnham Seniors were represented by Steve Dixon, Terry Lewis, John Humphreys, Adam Jones, Colin Smith, Martin Lewis, Peter Dudley-Hammatt, Mike Tiddy, Roger Sherwin, Mike Ward, David Brown, Eddie Quigley, Bill Talbot and Ian Wilson-Soppitt.
