Blackmoor Golf Club has raised more than £11,000 to help those suffering with a type of bone marrow blood cancer.

The charity Myloma UK funds research into the condition, and provides support services for people with it.

It was the charity chosen by club captains and club members to benefit from fundraising during the past year.

The elected 2022 captains chose it as the collective club charity as myloma is particularly meaningful to 2022 ladies’ captain Vi Ricketts, whose daughter was diagnosed with it.

Over the past 12 months the captains have organised various fundraising activities and events aimed at encouraging donations from club members.

Speaking at the club that was founded in 1913, Vi said: “It has been a pleasure to be able to support Myeloma UK, a charity which is very close to my heart.

“To help raise funds we have organised plenty of fun activities for our members, including captains’ raffles, coffee mornings, cake baking and enjoyable golf days.

“I’m sure that club immediate past captain Kevin Quinn and club immediate past seniors captain Nigel Barrow share my sentiments in thanking our wonderful club members for their generosity and enthusiasm throughout the year.

“While myeloma is incurable, it is treatable in most cases, and I hope the donation will go towards controlling the disease and improving patients’ quality of life.”

The final amount presented to Myeloma UK on Saturday, October 15 was £11,235, and the donation was presented to Emily Legg, director of fundraising at Myeloma UK.

Emily received the cheque from Vi, Kevin and Nigel.

Emily said: “We can’t thank Blackmoor enough for their generosity and support.

“We receive no core government funding for the work we do so voluntary donations and fundraising are the lifeblood of Myeloma UK.

“It’s thanks to support like this from Blackmoor that Myeloma UK can continue to fund vital research into new treatments.

“This is with the ultimate aim of finding a cure, as well as essential support services for patients, their families and those affected by myeloma.”

The cheque presentation was the day after the club AGM at which new captains and officers were elected, and the captains’ drive-in ceremony was held.

The drive-in sees the new captains drive a ball down the fairway and members have to pay to guess how far it goes.

The money raised was the first fundraising for the club’s new chosen charity for the coming year, the Macular Society.

The incoming club captain for 2023 Bill Stiles drove 200 yards down the middle from the first tee, a distance correctly guessed by Ed Ricketts.

Bill was preceded by Graeme Roberts, the newly-elected seniors’ captain, and Fran Berriman, the new ladies’ captain.
