SUTTON COMMON ROVERS 2, FARNHAM TOWN 3
FARNHAM needed this result to stay clear of the danger area in the Combined Counties League Premier Division.
It was a balanced performance by Paul Tanner’s side and the win was more convincing than the score suggests, with Sutton Common Rovers only getting close thanks to an own goal in injury time.
In the early stages, Town struggled to keep possession and it was slightly against the run of play when they took the lead on 22 minutes.
A good move down the right earned a corner and Sam Henneberg put in a decent ball for George Spiers who, unmarked in front of goal, made no mistake with his header.
Farnham were still not at their best and only some good saves from Richard Ossai and a goal-line clearance by Tom Smith enabled them to regroup at half-time with a one-goal advantage.
The visitors were stronger defensively in the second half and were better throughout the team. Almost immediately, they won another corner and Spiers grabbed his second goal with another free header.
Sutton Common, with nothing to lose, became more adventurous and got back into the game when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Ossai got his hand to Danny Fernandez’ spot kick, but the ball founds its way into the net off the post.
The spirited home side were forcing Farnham to defend deeper and Mike Campbell hit the post.
But Farnham still created good chances on the counter-attack and one resulted in the crucial third goal on 69 minutes, Chris Poole producing a spectacular finish for his first goal for Farnham.
Town were playing out time comfortably when, in the second minute of added time, Jack Cox sliced a clearance and the ball looped over Ossai’s head into the net.FARNHAM 0, CAMBERLEY 4Farnham ‘s defence of the CCL Premier Challenge Cup ended on Tuesday when they crashed 4-0 to Camberley, who thus avenged their defeat in last May’s final. Nothing went right for Farnham on the night. A deflected shot from Matt Bunyan put Camberley in front and Carl Garstang doubled the lead on 19 minutes. The controversial sending-off of Sam Slater left the home side with 10 men before half-time and only Richard Ossai’s brave goalkeeping spared them heavier punishment.Garstang scored the Krooners’ third soon after the interval. Farnham then won a penalty, only for Elliott Cardona, to blaze high over the bar, and Jamie Hoppitt rubbed salt into the wounds with Camberley’s fourth.
