Farnham Town have bolstered their squad with new signings – and it paid instant dividends.

Town have been inconsistent this season as they cope with a change of management and an influx of new faces in the squad.

Manager Sean Birchnall was delighted with his new recruits as his side eased to a 6-2 win at Guildford City.

They rode their luck at times – and City hit the bar when the match was delicately poised – but goals by Rob Carr, Seb Karczewski, Will Hellestoe, Connor Young (2) and Tom Smith wrapped up the points.

“We brought in Chris Ellis, a big centre half who has been around the Combined Counties a bit, as we needed a dominant defender and he really fits the bill.

“Ascot were very good dealing with the transfer and getting him across so we could play him on Saturday, and he had a real influence.

“We also brought in Will Hellestoe on a dual registration from Leatherhead. He’s a young lad who was at Cobham last year and we needed some cover in that area.

“We have him in the short term initially as we had a couple of lads who were not available and he did well.

“He’s very direct and he took his goal very well.

“I’d like to have him longer – you always want to keep good players – but Leatherhead have just appointed a new manger and he might have a different view and have his own plans for Will. We’ll have to wait and see what happens – we hope to have him available for Saturday’s trip to Croydon.

“But both players have fitted in really well with our group.”

Farnham are also still waiting for international clearance to play Georgeito-Silva Mulonda, who has been playing in Gibraltar with Lynx.

The central midfielder went through the ranks at West Ham and QPR, and also spent time at Southend United before playing in the Gibraltar Premier League.

He has also had spells with Dunstable and Fleet Town.

Birchnall said: “He has fitted in really well with the group – he’s a big, strong boy and it’s a shame we haven’t been able to play him, as he adds a real bit of competition in the middle of the park.

“The Guildford game was a bit frustrating at times as we started in a dominant fashion and in the blink of an eye we went 1-0 down.

“But we reacted well and went 2-1 up before a poor mistake saw them level.

“At half-time my first words to them were not to panic and to under-estimate how they had played in the first half, as they had done well, we just made little errors.

“In the second half we showed some maturity and professionalism and had control of the game, and didn’t seem flustered.

“Will made it 3-2 and although Guildford hit the bar soon after, Stu Norman in their goal has pulled off two amazing saves from Seb and Owen Dean that were just superb.

“We made some substitutions and Connor Young and Tom Smith both came off the bench and scored, which was good to see as I think we have lacked having players coming on who have made an impact on the game.

“The hard work we put in saw us creating opportunities and this time we took them.

“It was an important win because we couldn’t allow the gap to the teams above us to get any wider if we are to be competitive.

“You can see from the results that teams are going to take points off each other all season – like Badshot Lea drawing with Banstead at the weekend, who are at opposite ends of the table.

“It’s a very competitive league and we have to stay competitive within it – but more than anything we needed a performance and that’s what we were focusing on.

“I’m not really bothered about the teams we are playing. I’m not that bothered about Croydon this week – we have to focus on Farnham Town. We have to work to our own strengths.

“We know the Croydon ground because we played Balham there not long ago – we know the environment we will be playing in and the state of the pitch, so we will be prepared for it.

“We are also going with a bit more confidence and positivity and we will be able to go there and get a result.”
