THIS was an important win for Farnham Town after their 5-0 hiding at Windsor last weekend in the Combined Counties Premier League.

Manager Paul Tanner rang the changes for Tuesday’s match against Sutton Common Rovers. In came George Spiers, last season’s centre-half who has re-signed for Farnham after leaving Godalming, and Sam Henneberg, a youngster from Sandhurst, who played on the right and scored his first goal for the club.

Farnham’s other scorers were Spiers and Yanick Owusu, another newcomer who has joined from nearby Hale.

Town looked to have a much better balance and deserved their 2-0 interval lead, Spiers and Henneberg getting the goals.

Sutton Common struggled to create a decent chance, with Farnham solid across the back. Newly appointed captain Doug Ford led by example and full-backs Max Meaton and Tom Smith had excellent games.

Farnham began the second half equally well, again controlling the play, and Owusu popped up with a fine header to finish off a slick move on the right.

Town had set their sights on a clean sheet, but with 30 seconds to go Sutton caught them napping and pulled one back.

Still, this was an encouraging performance by Farnham. This Saturday, Town travel to North Greenford.

Windsor 5, Farnham 0. Farnham made an unhappy return to Stag Meadow – the scene of their Challenge Cup triumph at the end of last season – as Windsor ran up a 5-0 scoreline, two goals coming from penalties.

With their goalkeeper withdrawing at the last moment and several regulars unavailable, Town were always up against it.

They contained Windsor for much of the first half, but Kieran Knight converted penalties either side of half-time and Andrew Ingram headed the third on the hour to put the game beyond Farnham.

Substitute Barry Dunbar scored two late goals to give Windsor a rather flattering scoreline.

Badshot Lea suffered their worst defeat since entering the Combined Counties League – thrashed 9-0 by Hartley Wintney, the reigning champions, on Tuesday. Ross Cook led the rout with a four-goal tally.
