ALRESFORD advanced two more places to sixth in the Sydenhams League Premier Division table after a gritty win away to struggling AFC Fawley.

The Magpies overcame both a difficult, bobbly surface and being reduced to ten men by a controversial red card, thanks to goals in each half by Craig Harding.

The visitors missed some decent chances before Harding made the breakthrough, with Sam Burt driving just over the crossbar and Rob Flooks getting on the end of a free-kick from Steve Hall, only to see his header well saved.

Tom Ashton was unlucky to get his marching orders for an alleged flying elbow early in the second half, but Alresford regrouped and Harding’s second goal wrapped up the three points.

After a midweek home match against Portland, Alresford visit Lymington this Saturday. The Magies host Fareham next Wednesday (March 22).

* Alton return to Division One action with a home match against US Portsmouth on Saturday. On Tuesday, they travel to Laverstock & Ford.
