Farnham Town continued their excellent form with a 4-1 win at Redhill in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday – and boss Paul Johnson is hoping rumours that his side might be moved to the Wessex League this summer prove untrue.

Town stretched their unbeaten run to nine games in the league with Saturday’s comprehensive victory – a run which has included seven wins and two draws.

Last week Alton manager Kevin Adair revealed his side might be moved to the Wessex League this summer, and now Farnham are the latest club to have their plans for next season affected by rumours of a league move.

Johnson has built a head of steam at The Memorial Ground as he looks to win Combined Counties promotion next season, but he admitted a league move would not be ideal.

“There is talk of us being moved to the Wessex League,” said Johnson. “I’ve seen it on some spreadsheets and hope it doesn’t happen – it would affect everything.

“In the Combined Counties we do 900 miles of travelling. In the Wessex League it would be 2,000 miles – which would have a big impact on the club.

“I’m being open and honest with the players about it. You don’t hide it from them as you don’t want to stitch them up.

“It affects recruitment massively as I can’t promise which league we’re going to be in.

“We won’t know anything until after the play-offs.”

On the pitch, Farnham produced another impressive performance to sweep aside Redhill in style on Saturday.

Town raced into a 3-1 lead at half-time thanks to goals from Owen Dean, Lamin Ceesay and Shamal Edwards. Ceesay claimed his second of the afternoon late on to seal the 4-1 win.

“We were good in the first half going forward,” said Johnson. “For their goal we were caught on the ball, but it was the one chance Redhill had.

“Those goals have been coming for Lamin. The plan was to keep going in the second half, but it didn’t quite happen. The game petered out.

“Redhill had a little go, and if they had got the next goal that would have put some pressure on us.

“We’re nine unbeaten in the league and we’re also unbeaten away from home since I joined the club, which is a good little marker.

“If we finish in the top six it will be a good achievement.

“With everything else going on at the club, with the ground improvements, it is a good place to be at the moment.”
