FARNHAM TOWN’S stand-in boss Roger Steer believes the club are geared up for success next season.

This has been a turbulent campaign for Town, who are on their third manager after the dismissals of Colin Millard and Tony Reid.

Reid – who had worked with Steer before they were partners at The Memorial Ground – was in the middle of a rebuilding programme when he was axed.

He was giving the club’s youngsters their opportunity – and they showed their promise with a gutsy display against high-riding Badshot Lea on Monday.

The Baggies won 3-1 but were made to work hard for the points, even though they had been robbed of experienced players.

Steer believes a summer of canny signings of three or four players – and a good pre-season to sharpen players’ fitness levels – will put the club on a good footing.

“We have a lot of promising youngsters here already as well as some good experienced guys. If we can add to that for next year, I don’t think we will be far away,” he said.

“Hopefully most of the players who took the field against Badshot Lea will be around next season.

“We had some experienced players missing as Max Blackmore had Covid and Harry Carter and Matt Steele were unavailable. But that gives the younger element of the club an opportunity and they have certainly risen to the challenge. They will have learned from the game.

“We are a side in transition and Badshot Lea are one of the best teams in the league and overall I thought we had 60 per cent of the game with the ball at our feet in possession.

“This side have the makings of a team who can go paces – we just need to add a little more quality and experience in certain areas, and with the youngsters coming through I think we will have a strong outfit.”

Veteran Steer has been involved in non-league football for 50 years and has ruled himself out of the role.

He said: “Whoever comes in will have a lot to work with, and they will get supported well by the fans and the club committee who have been very strong and made some tough decisions at times.

“The good thing about the club is they want to move on and want to progress. It’s a good time for someone to come in.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here –they’re a good bunch of lads and they listen and next season I’ll still be around to help out where I can.

“I think we need three or four good-quality players. If we can get those, with a little bit of experience, we will have a very strong squad to challenge.

“We have some good people already here. The team working with me – Tristan Rees, Chris Adams and Dan Goodall – are good people and want to be part of it, and sometimes a club don’t have to look too far.

“The advantage is they know the players and the players know them and they know what is expected going forward. They know they need to bring in extra quality to make that difference – it may not require a huge change to achieve that.

“The players have responded so well over the three games. At Combined Counties level you have to work for the right to play and I thought we showed that, particularly in the first half.

“Next year the local derbies against Badshot Lea will have a different result, I can guarantee that.”
