AMESBURY 1, ALRESFORD TOWN 2
ALRESFORD quickly regained the winning habit with three valuable points at Amesbury on Saturday.
A winning run stretching back to October was finally ended by Sydenhams League leaders Moneyfields the week before, but the Magpies showed character to come from behind to beat mid-table Amesbury.
Alresford were dominant in a goalless first half, but failed to take advantage of several corners and free-kicks, and also had a goal disallowed.
It was Amesbury who took the lead in the second half with a good finish by substitute Michael Weatherall.
The Magpies responded well and equalised on 62 minutes. Scott Munro played a ball to Tom Sands who headed down for Chris Mason to slot into the bottom corner.
Alresford then really got into their stride. Mason saw a 25-yard drive fly just past the top corner and the crucial second goal followed in the 78th minute.
It seemed just a half-chance as the ball landed at Sam Burt’s feet, but he immediately dispatched it with great accuracy into the net.
There could have been more and twice Alresford thought they should have been awarded penalties, the second time after Sands was brought down after a superb solo run.
l Alresford tasted defeat again on Tuesday when they crashed 4-1 at Southern League side Fleet Town in the semi-finals of the North Hampshire Senior Cup.
Alresford are home to top-five side AFC?Portchester this Saturday.
l Alton, whose Division One game at AFC Stoneham was postponed last weekend, host Christchurch, currently third, this Saturday.
