ASCOT UTD 1, FARNHAM TN 3

FARNHAM, after struggling in their early league fixtures, will take heart from this excellent FA Vase victory away to Hellenic Premier League opponents Ascot United.

Playing a rare Sunday fixture due to the Ascot racing programme, Town turned it into a black sabbath for the home side.

The omens had not been good for Farnham, with key striker Matt Glass unavailable for five weeks due to a minor operation.

Sixteen-year-old Josh Stepney stepped up and showed that he is fully capable of playing a front-running role at this level.

In wet and windy conditions, Farnham immediately looked the better side. Max Meaton, Charlie Bath and Jordan Stepney had early goal efforts, while the returning Jack Dillon was soon making an impact down the right flank.

Dillon was involved in the crucial first goal on 13 minutes, putting pressure on keeper Lee Allen who spilled the ball. Dillon prodded it towards goal and Josh Stepney finished off neatly

Meaton, Farnham’s young captain, then saw his shot tipped against the post by Allen, making amends for his earlier error.

However, Town’s lead was wiped out before half-time. Jonny Denton swung in a deep corner and Louis Bouwers nodded the ball down for Rob Lazarczuk to score with a deft volley.

Ascot, now with the wind behind them, began the second half on the front foot and Town keeper Adrian Giles stood up well to beat away a fierce shot from Lazarczuk.

Lively flank play from Dillon and Tom Smith gradually forced Ascot back into their own half and chances began to come the visitors’ way.

Josh Stepney headed wide of a gaping goal after Dillon had showed pace and strength to get in a great cross.

Farnham finally regained the lead from a 65th-minute penalty. Allen fouled Dillon with his feet and Meaton’s spot kick found the left-hand corner, via a glove and post.

Rather than sit back, Town continued to force the issue and, with five minutes to go, Charlie Bath’s shot from outside the box beat Allen on its way into the corner; 3-1, game over, and Farnham’s reward is a trip to Warminster in the next round.
