ALTON FC Ladies have a cup final to look forward to this weekend. On Sunday, they travel to play Barton Rovers at Thatcham Town FC’s ground in the Southern Region Women’s League Chairman’s Cup final.

This is Alton Ladies’ first season at this level, having been promoted from county football last season. On the way to the final, they have beaten Newbury and Milton Keynes. With one league game to go, the side are sitting fifth in the table, having won nine of their 17 fixtures.

The team was formed by manager Wayne Fox to allow the girls to play football on their own. Some of the current squad have been involved since the start and five of the player are 16 or 17, playing their first season of adult football.

The side’s leading scorer is Megan Lebbern with 14 goals from 19 games, followed by Afiya Johnson with nine.

Sunday’s cup final kicks off at 11am and, whatever the result, it’s been a great achievement by Alton Ladies to come this far so soon.
