BOURNE Club’s Wadham Cup is a family tennis tournament run every year in memory of Nigel Wadham, who was a first-team player at the club for many years and won numerous doubles titles at the annual championships.

A successful local businessman, Nigel was a respected club member, both on and off court, and the tournament named after him is for Bourne juniors aged over 11, playing with an adult relative.

This year, the Wadham Cup was run in tandem with the Bourne Open Day, which also saw the official opening of the tennis bubble which will enable members to play all year round in any weather.

With 17 pairs entered, the competition was tough. An initial round-robin format meant everyone got plenty of games. The top pairs then played off in a hotly-contested, but good-natured final round.

The Wadham Cup was won by William Farnfield and his father, Richard. Runners-up were Ben Atkins and dad David.

“We’re delighted to have had such a strong entry,” said Julie Crane, who chairs the club’s tennis section. “The competition was fierce and congratulations go to William and Richard who played a very strong final.”
