CHAWTON Park bowlers were involved in three interesting games last week.
The three rinks playing at Chawton were in command from the start, but Hampshire’s travelling bowlers struggled to gauge the speed of the carpet. At the halfway mark, it appeared that Hampshire would lose, but the away players eventually found the line and speed, allowing their side to win by a narrow margine.
Last weekend, Chawton men played the second round of the Denny Memorial Cup against the Adur Club, based at Brighton. Chawton knew it would be a tough match against very experienced opponents.
Playing at home, Adam White’s rink won 21-9, but David Sims’ rink lost 12-29. Playing away, Mark Fyfield’s rink went down 14-18 and John Kellow’s rink lost 13-22 An overall loss for Chawton Park.
Chawton Park ladies played the first round of the Riversmeet League against Palmerston Bowling Club (Fareham). This proved to be a close and exciting match. Margaret Leppard’s rink were level at 22-22 after 18 ends, but eventually lost 23-25. Margaret Holden’s rink trailed by five shots at the 18th end, but pulled back to lose by just one shot, 20-21.
Playing away, Beryl Collier’s rink were 17-17 at 18 ends, but lost 18-20, while Brenda Plumpton’s rink drew 20-20. Chawton Ladies lost overall.
