ALTON Social’s week began badly with single-shot defeats for Hazel Marke, Brenda Plumpton and Margaret Holden in the County Area Triples Final and also for Dick Holden and Adam White in the County Pairs.
Sue Murray and Brenda Plumpton led their Hook opponents 20-4 in the County O55s, yet found themselves one shot behind playing the last end and it required a couple of Plumpton ‘specials’ to pull the game out of the fire. However, Brenda lost to Alyson Flint (Cove) in the Champion of Champions.
Margaret Holden played Alice Lovett (Basingstoke Town) for a place in the County Singles quarter-finals and experience told as Margaret won 21-10. Margaret and Hazel Marke overturned a 12-0 deficit to win by one shot against Jan Allen and Sarah Bowen in the County Pairs.
Dick Holden, Basa Smith, Mark Fyfield and Adam White defeated Bill Lawer’s Howard Park rink by three shots in the Fours Area Final.
Alton Social men beat Oakley in the Hants & Berks Cup and there was success for Malcolm Henderson and Ken Ward in the O60s Pairs, but Social teams failed to register a point in Whitchurch League and Stan Hardman League matches. However, the Basingstoke League triples side finally won, beating Oakley A 31/2-11/2.
Alton Social played their first friendly on the new green last weekend and defeated Alton 121-61. July will be a busy month for Social, with visits from Bowls England and Friends of Bowls England coming up.
