CHIDDINGFOLD pulled out all the stops for the Armistice 100 celebrations at the weekend.

The village joined the Battle’s Over nationwide tribute on Remembrance Sunday by illuminating the area with a Beacon of Light on the green.

The ceremony started just before 7pm with a reading of Tribute to the Millions by Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer Sean Garrett, who lives in the village.

The Last Post was then sounded by another villager Emma Biggs.

Chiddingfold Bonfire Association provided the beacon, which was lit at 7pm by Cub Scout Enzo Frederick.

Five minutes later, St Mary’s Church started its commemorative peal of Ringing Out For Peace.

Dan Hall, who owns The Crown pub, laid on mulled wine and there was a themed tent.

Earlier the same day, the Black Box Theatre Company performed topical play, Bully Beef & Whizzbangs, in the village hall. The performance finished to coincide with the start of the Beacon of Light event.

Bonfire committee chairman Simon Manuel, said: “It was a wonderful evening. It was all about our community coming together – a tribute delivered by villagers for the village.

“Hundreds came to share the evening on the village green – it was very humbling. Former Chiddingfold rector the Rev Sarah Brough returned to lead the service in the church and it was packed.”
