ON A beautifully sunny and still day, a group of more than 20 members of the Liphook u3a Strollers Group gathered at the Duke of Cambridge pub in Tilford to enjoy a gentle stroll across part of Hankley Common.

The objective was to visit remains of a replica ‘Atlantic Wall’ built in 1943 by Canadian soldiers.

It was erected so they could rehearse attacks on the real thing on the coast of France in readiness for the D-Day invasion of Europe in June 1944.

The group found traces of other military remains in front of and behind the wall.

The stroll back was equally pleasant and the walkers returned to the pub to enjoy an excellent lunch.

“The Strollers is only one of the walking groups run by Liphook u3a and all are popular – perhaps because they usually involve lunch!” said Gwen Pate.
