Year 3 pupils presented a Christingle service (pictured) for St Matthew’s CE Primary School at St Matthew’s Church in Blackmoor.

Year 2 teacher Lizzie Ransom said: “They explained the significance of each element. Every child then lit their Christingle candle and took time to think and reflect on the holiday season.”

Christingle is a tradition which has taken place for more than half a century and revolves around children decorating oranges with red ribbon, cocktail sticks and sweets. These, as well as a candle, highlight different parts of the Christian story.

A Christingle service was also held at the Church of St Lawrence in Alton on Sunday afternoon, one of a number taking place across Hampshire to raise money for The Children’s Society to support vulnerable children and teenagers facing abuse, neglect or exploitation this Christmas.

Mark Russell, chief executive of The Children’s Society, said: “We’re thrilled that so many Christingle events are happening across Hampshire to help us be there for the vulnerable children we support and we’re truly grateful to everyone who attends for their support.”
