East Hampshire District Council has directed more than £100,000 of government money to groups and businesses around the district to help boost tourism and strengthen communities.

Seven Rural Grants have been awarded as part of the council’s Grow Up! programme, using funding secured from the government in competition with other rural areas.

Now in its third year, the Rural Grants scheme prioritises projects giving the greatest economic, environmental and social benefits to the district. This year the council received 34 applications requesting more than £700,000 of funding.

Regeneration and prosperity portfolio holder Cllr Robert Mocatta said: “It was a very difficult job picking the right applications to support but I am very happy with the final list. The recipients are a great spread of innovative businesses, brilliant charities and exciting community events.

“This money has been secured by East Hampshire District Council from the government. It could have gone to community projects anywhere in the country so we are very pleased to have been able to direct this investment into East Hampshire, and into projects that will benefit thousands of people.”
