A PROSTATE awareness roadshow has inspired a Haslemere man to organise a similar event in the town next weekend.
“Having seen the success of the roadshow held earlier in the year in Guildford, I vowed to give local men, over 45 years of age, a chance to find out if they showed early signs of prostate cancer,” said Roger Mcdivitt.
“A simple blood test now has a reasonable chance of indicating this cancer at a stage where treatment stands a very good chance of a cure. Currently, 47,000 men are diagnosed annually of which 11,000 die.”
Roger lost his wife to a gynaecological cancer which had shown no early indicators and the similarity had helped him to understand the impact of sudden serious diagnosis.
A few weeks ago Roger approached Haslemere’s Rotary Club and asked their assistance in replicating what his Guildford experience.
Taking place on Saturday, September 22 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the Georgian Hotel, Haslemere and overseen by Roy Sowersby, who has received training in holding similar events, the event is supported by The Haslemere Hares and volunteer phlebotomists who will hopefully test 200 men who do not fit into current NHS testing programmes
Four one-hour sessions will serve to spread workload and a booking system is available.
It is hoped that donations will go towards laboratory costs. Those who have not booked are welcome tho attend, but will be seen at the end of those who have.
To book call (01428) 661356, leaving your name, telephone number and email address.
You will then be contacted by the organisers to make an appointment.
