AN interim chief executive has been appointed to take the reins of East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) and Havant Borough Council.

Gill Kneller, previously an executive director for both councils, has stepped into the role for six months.

She replaces Sandy Hopkins, who was chief executive at Havant Borough Council since 2007 and of both organisations since 2009.

“I am delighted to be taking on this new and challenging role and thank the councillors for demonstrating their faith in me,” Ms Kneller said.

“These are exciting times for local government, with plenty of challenges but also plenty of opportunities. Across both councils we have fantastic colleagues and progressive councillors who are committed to providing quality services to their residents.

“I am extremely proud to have this incredible opportunity and I will be working hard for our customers and communities.”

As well as a joint chief executive, EHDC and Havant Borough Council share a management team and many services.

Both councils have also made two other internal appointments to the management structure. Simon Jenkins has been chosen as the interim director of regeneration and place and Natalie Meagher has been selected as the interim director of neighbourhoods and operations - with effect from January.

Cllr Richard Millard, EHDC leader, added: “I have known Gill for many years and she is the ideal candidate for the role. She has the passion, drive and vision to take this council forward.

“She is highly regarded of by officers and councillors and knows how to get the job done. She will be an excellent chief executive and we are lucky to have her.”
