Offering some betting tips, local trainer Richard Parker said: “You need a stayer.
“Having a horse that can gallop for three miles is half the battle, but you can’t tell by looking at it. You need to study its breeding and its course record.
“Point to Pointers are usually either horses that have run under National Hunt Rules and are now a bit older or have never run at all.
“When they are in the paddock look at their coat to see if it’s in healthy condition and watch if it shows enthusiasm.
“Attitude is very important. A woebegone expression is no good.”
Gates open on Saturday, May 12, at 11am for families to set up their picnics and enjoy the funfair and stalls.
The first of the six races starts at 2pm. Visitors can watch the horses parade in the paddock and have a flutter at the bookies.
A ‘Stays well’ description for a horse is a good sign, as the course is over three miles with 18 jumps.
The races are graded according to ability and experience, so a maiden race is for horses that have not won anything to date and an open race is for experienced racers with reputations at stake.
Look out for the men’s and the ladies open races with fierce competition in both.
