A PERSON has died after being struck by a train at the Bentley station foot crossing on Wednesday afternoon.

South West Trains announced at 4.27pm on Wednesday that all lines between Farnham and Alton were blocked “due to the emergency services dealing with an incident”.

British Transport Police later confirmed that a person had been struck by a train at Bentley and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman said: “We have been called to Alice Holt level crossing in Farnham after reports a person was struck by a train. Police were alerted just before 4.30pm.

“Officers have attended alongside paramedics, however a person has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene.

“We are now working to identify the person and inform their family. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Trains from London terminated at Farnham while emergency services dealt with the incident, forcing passengers seeking onward travel to wait for rail replacement buses until the line reopened at around 7pm.

Valid train tickets were also accepted on the Stagecoach number 65 bus between Farnham and Alton.

But passengers travelling to and from Bentley faced a 30-minute walk between the village and the station.
