REMEMBRANCE commemorations in and around Haslemere to mark WWI Armistice 100 this weekend will be ‘truly memorable.’
A record attendance is expected at Haslemere High Street War Memorial, on Remembrance Sunday, when residents will also lay wreaths in memory of individual soldiers from the town, who fell in The Great War.
The parade will leave St Bartholomew’s Church at 10.30am for the Service of Remembrance at 10.55am.
A WWI-themed lunch for the town is being held in The Georgian Hotel by the Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St George.
After joining in the nationwide ‘Ringing For Peace’ by more than 1,000 churches at 7.05pm on Sunday evening, St Alban’s Church, Hindhead, is holding ‘The War is Over’, featuring poetry, readings, music, and including letters written by the WWI vicar, who went to the Front as an army chaplain.
Chiddingfold is one of a host of communities across the UK and abroad supporting the nationwide ‘Battle’s Over’ tributes by lighting a beacon at 7pm on the village green, followed by a peal of bells for peace at St Mary’s Church.
The commemoration starts on the green with a reading at 6.53pm, followed by The Last Post.
At Chiddingfold Village Hall, BlackBox Theatre Company presents ‘Bully Beef and Whizzbangs’ set on battlefields of France, at 5pm, and a exhibition commemorating local soldiers will be held in The Chiddingfold Archive.
