HAMPSHIRE'S Police and Crime Commissioner will not face prosecution over allegations that he falsified his address during last year's election.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said this week that no charges will be brought against Simon Hayes following an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
The investigation was launched after the Mail on Sunday newspaper published photographs of his alleged second home - his wife's house in Earls Barton, Northamptonshire - 115 miles from his official address in Bishop's Waltham.
Mr Hayes said: "The IPCC and CPS have considered whether there were any irregularities relating to my residency at the time of my nomination. The complaint made, by the losing candidate, that I did not live in Hampshire was considered by the IPCC to be without merit. I am naturally pleased at the finding. In addition I can confirm the CPS has considered there was no evidence to suggest that there was anything improper in my nomination form.
"Although an intrusion into my personal life, this has not distracted me from my responsibilities to the people of Hampshire."
Greatham councillor Don Jerrard, who also stood in the elections, defended him when the allegations were made.
Mr Jerrard, who met Mr Hayes to offer assistance, said the investigation was sparked as part of a "vindictive campaign" and was pleased commissioner had been cleared.
