HAMPSHIRE County Council confirmed it will keep the entire network of 24 household waste recycling centres open, but users face paying for certain items to be disposed of from the auumn.

Around 12,000 residents responded to the council’s public consultation on how savings could be made, and councillor Rob Humby, executive member for environment, said he was “genuinely pleased” the council had “found a way to make this happen”, but opening hours would have to be cut to make the required savings.

• From January 1, 2017, winter opening hours will be 11am-4pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with no Thursday opening

• From April 1, 2017, summer opening hours will be 11am-6pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday in summer, with no Thursday opening

• From October 1, 2016, soil, and rubble (including construction and demolition materials), plasterboard and asbestos will be “charged for” items

• Trade waste from small and medium-sized businesses will be accepted on a chargeable basis, accepting the same materials the sites currently accept from residents

• The trade waste initiative will only operate during the working week from Monday to Friday (excluding Thursday when sites are closed).

• Residents from outside Hampshire will continue to be able to use sites but from September 1, 2017, will be charged £2 per visit.
