ALTON Lions Club raised more than £3,650 last weekend to support those fleeing Ukraine.

It collected in the foyer at Sainsbury’s in Alton on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. President Atul Patel said: “The response to this appeal has been astonishing.”

The money will go to the Lions Club International Foundation’s Refugees and Displaced Persons Fund, which is sending money, food, water, hygiene items and clothes to Lions supporting refugee relief in countries bordering Ukraine.

Mr Patel said: “As a voluntary organisation, Lions Club International Foundation is able to send every penny raised directly to local Lions working at the coal face who are best able to direct the funding to where it is most needed.”
