AS the colder months approach, some ‘top tips’ from healthcare professionals have been issued to keep children free from illness over the winter period.
The advice is to:
n Get them protected: Flu jabs are available for all children aged two and three years old on or before August 31 for all children in reception classes and school years one to four, and for children aged from two to 17 with a long-term health condition such as asthma, diabetes or heart problems. The flu jab is available for children as a safe, quick and pain-free nasal spray.

* Get stocked up: Have a chat with your local pharmacist about a winter survival kit for the kids. They will be able to recommend the best options for common bugs and illnesses that you may encounter over the colder months.
* Give your medicine cabinet a makeover and include a self-care guide, painkillers such a paracetamol or ibuprofen, antihistamines for allergies, antiseptic cream for bites and stinks, laxative to help constipation, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit with plasters and bandages to manage cuts and sprains.
* Know who to speak to: Many common symptoms and illnesses will often pass without needing medication.
The Healthier Together website has lots of great advice if you are worried your child may be ill, and highlights who to speak to if they are.
