Haslemere’s town crier Christian Ashdown rang for the Queen and newly-elected town mayor, Councillor Jacquie Keen, lit a bonfire at the Woolmer Hill Sports Ground to get Haslemere’s four days of Jubilee festivities underway on Thursday evening.

The Jubilee bonfire and fireworks event featured entertainment from 8pm followed by a torchlight procession at 8.45pm to the bonfire, lit at the same time as beacons across the country to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Performances were given by local community choir Harmonix Choir, food and drink was also available, and a firework display rounded off the evening. Photographer Will Pattenden was there to capture the occasion.

Permanent Memorial

There will be celebrations over the Jubilee weekend in Haslemere, but in addition a new tower clock will be installed on the Haslewey Community Centre. This Jubilee clock will be a permanent record of the Queen’s extraordinary record of service.

The clock will be four faced and will chime the hours in the daytime. It will face directly on to Lion Green, where many of the town events are held throughout the year.

Charter Fair

The Haslemere Charter Fair will be open from 11am to 5pm on Friday, June 3. This year it will have a Jubilee flavour and all stall holders have been asked to dress their stalls and themselves in an appropriate manner!

Rotary Scarecrow Competition

Following the success of the first scarecrow competition last year, there will be a second competition this year with the judging taking place at Lion Green on Saturday, June 4 at 3pm. The theme will be the Royalty… Entry forms are on the website.

Jubilee Concert at St Christopher’s Church

Saturday, June 4 – Jubilee Concert in St Christopher’s Church at 7pm. The programme includes music from the Queen’s Coronation. Free entry with retiring collection and the surplus going to support Ukraine. Haslemere Twinning Association will also be welcoming friends from Haslemere’s Germany twin town Horb am Neckar to this concert.

Civic Church Service

At 11am on Sunday, June 5, there will be a civic service to mark the occasion in St Bartholomew’s Church. The mayor will be present and the choir will sing a specially composed anthem.

Jubilee Carnival Procession

The carnival procession will set off from High Lane Estate at 1.30 pm and make its way down the High Street, Lower Street and Wey Hill to Lion Green. The procession will include floats from local societies, businesses and schools. It will also include classic cars from every decade of her reign.

Lion Green Tea Party and Concert

On Lion Green there will be stalls and amusements and tea (with scones) for 2,000. Admission is free but the cost of Tea for Two will be £6 booked in advance. Book your cream tea by going to the website http://www.haslemerefestival.org.uk

In addition, there will be a stage hosting the bands – covering every decade of the Queen’s reign. The music starts at 3pm and the finale will be a Queen Tribute Band.
