A south of Butser school community is in mourning following the death of two Year 9 students in two separate unconnected incidents on the same day.

Flowers and tributes have been left at the entrance to Horndean Technology College (HCT) in memory of the 14-year-olds who died last Monday (July 7).

A suspected drug-driver has been arrested following a tragedy in Catherington as a boy died following a collision with a car towing a trailer on Lovedean Lane around 9pm.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services and the Hampshire & IOW Air Ambulance the boy, who was a pedestrian, died at the scene with his family being supported by specialist officers.

The driver, a man aged 24 from Waterlooville, has been released under investigation having been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving whilst unfit through drugs.

The second student was a girl who died at an address in Waterlooville with police not treating her death as suspicious. The two deaths are not linked with the police adding that a file is being prepared for the coroner.

While the names and pictures of both students both feature at the HCT memorial the Post has declined to reveal their identity to readers in respect to the pair, their families and the school community.

The school’s headteacher, Julie Summerfield, led the tributes to the pair who will greatly missed by their friends, teachers and everyone involved in HCT.

She said: “Both students were valued members of HTC and we will all miss them greatly.

“Our thoughts are with their families and friends and they are receiving appropriate support.”

Witnesses or anyone with information or dashcam footage relating to the Lovedean Lane incident has been urged to contact Hampshire Police on 101 quoting 44250301792.
