BOHUNT students enjoyed another successful Heroes Day with members of the army and infantry providing unforgettable experiences for 370 pupils between the ages of 13 and 14.

Attending the event on the hottest day of the year (reaching 34 degrees Centigrade), were representatives from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, known as the Tigers, the Household Cavalry, the Royal Military Police, who were supported by a female officer and who staged a crime scene and forensics for students.

Also present was the Army outreach team, who worked with students in several team-building exercises, the Army Air Corps, who specialised in camouflage and concealment techniques, the Royal Marines, who conducted a fitness challenge as well as the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, including one female mechanic, who helped to promote Bohunt’s science, technology, engineering and maths programme.

Members of the Military Preparation College also engaged students in team-building exercises and the Air Ambulance team was supported by an inspirational speech delivered by fundraiser Pete Burch, who lost his arms in a horrific accident but was saved by Hampshire and IoW Ambulance crew.

The day was rounded off with a presentation by Canine Partners.

Organiser Ginny Green said: “Although it was the hottest day of the year and we had to supply plenty of water to everyone taking part, students really enjoyed it.

“The following day, as part of ‘Bohunt Focus Week’ we had economic lessons concentrating on emotional health and wellbeing, relationships and friendships, drugs and alcohol.

“Students benefited from visiting speakers, learned about the effects of smoking and illegal drugs. During the week we also had visits from the Terence Higgins Trust and a nutritional scientist.

“The week provided inspiration as well as unique experiences, where pupils found out more about the army, drugs, team building and communication skills and some have already volunteered to take part in further workshops.”
