Haslemere Walking Festival starts on Friday (July 15).

The festival – which is organised by Visit Haslemere on behalf of the town council – will start with a four-mile walk from Haslemere Educational Museum, over Marley Heights, to Shulbrede Priory in the Milland Valley.

Shulbrede Priory is where Hubert Parry stayed and wrote the music for Jerusalem – the famous hymn adopted by the Women’s Institute.

The walk is not designed for athletes – it is aimed at people who are slower walkers.

Former town mayor David Round – who walked the Greensand Way three years ago, barefoot, to raise funds for Haslemere Museum – is encouraging people to do the Shulbrede Priory walk barefoot, although this is optional.

Anyone who would like to book a free place on the walk should visit https://haslemere-museum.arttickets.org.uk/ to do so.

This year’s walking festival includes a number of walks around Hindhead, the Punch Bowl and Haslemere.
