Mention Amnesty in Haslemere and most people will think of Gunnel Ingham.

Even if her name might not be familiar, her face would be recognisable from years of stalls at the Charities and Charter Fair, or holding a collecting tin outside the station at 6am.

Under Gunnel’s guidance Haslemere Amnesty raised enough money not only for local activities but also for Amnesty International.

Her contributions were recognised with the Haslemere Volunteer Award in 2018. She single-handedly ensured the group remained a viable force when founding members retired. Gunnel found herself taking on every role and responsibility to keep the diminishing group functioning.

She worked tirelessly as a one-person chair, secretary, treasurer, fundraiser and archivist, instigating many fundraising and social events. She delighted in her daughters and grandsons. As was her wish she remained at home until the end and died peacefully in December 2023 with her daughters by her side.
