THE first golf tournament organised in memory of James Stephenson was held at Old Thorns Golf and Country Club.

Mr Stephenson was killed while cycling along the A3 on New Year’s Day this year. He had worked as head chef at Applegarth Farm shop and restaurant in Grayshott for two-and-a-half years.

The 32-year-old chef left behind a young family – wife Lisa and two daughters, one-year-old Ellie, and five-year-old Faith.

Shortly after the accident, staff at Applegarth and its customers, plus friends of James, helped raise £10,000 to support the family.

This month’s golf tournament raised another £10,850, with 104 players and a team of caddies braving wet and windy conditions.

Applegarth owner Will Benson said he was committed to having a similar event every year from now on.

“James was a truly talented chef. He set high standards and built a great team in his two years here at Applegarth. He is sorely missed by us all,” he said.

For the tournament, 18 businesses sponsored a hole each while Old Thorns provided the course for free.

An auction was held for caddying services provided by Lisa and 11 other family friends.
