PRODUCERS are gearing up for another busy festive season at the forthcoming Hampshire farmers’ markets.

The markets are held across the county every month and are popular in Alton, Petersfield and Winchester.

“It is going to be an exciting time for our Winchester market and all of our local producers are looking forward to being in the heart of the main shopping area,” said Alex Handford, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets’ business manager.

“Christmas is a time when food shoppers are looking for something different to celebrate the festive season. We have our regular shoppers who have already discovered a whole range of food they can buy at our markets that isn’t easily available elsewhere, and not just the traditional festive fare but all those other extras we like to enjoy over the holiday period.”

Festive seasonal favourites and other food on offer at the Hampshire farmers’ markets include meat, game, poultry, pies, chocolate, fudge, wine, beer, preserves, fresh and smoked fish, fruit, vegetables, Christmas cakes, and a wide selection of Artisan breads.

More unusual meats on offer include water buffalo, goat, charcuterie, and biltong made with Hampshire beef.

“We also have a wide range of food to go options at our markets across the county including our popular breakfast baps, hot soup, bubble and squeak, water buffalo burgers and hog roast,” added Mr Handford.

“Visitors often love to just graze their way along the stalls, sampling and buying, have their breakfast baps, then something for brunch or lunch time hot food and then cake to finish.”

There are also some interesting gift ideas to be had at the market, which are ideal with Christmas in mind.

“Our local producers love the festive season as it also draws in new customers, who then become regular customers,” said Mr Handford.

“They have discovered how affordable the produce is and have enjoyed the vibrant market atmosphere, sampling and buying food that is fully traceable and locally produced. Many also appreciate meeting and talking to the producers and buying local produce, knowing that they are helping to protect the environment, rural jobs and the rural economy.”

And he added: “Visitors to our markets love the fact that they are buying local, and especially the freshness of the fruit and vegetables, often picked just the day before the market.

“We are looking forward to seeing all our regular customers leading up to Christmas and lots of new ones too.”
