IS the fear of crime worse than the reality?

This question will be tackled at the Community Forum at Lindford Village Hall on October 20, starting at 6.30pm.

Chief Inspector Beth Pirie, East Hampshire’s top police officer, will attend to discuss crime levels in the area.

Residents worried about crime can attend and, if they wish, speak to a panel of police and community safety officers.

Chief Insp Pirie said: “Fear of crime does not necessarily correlate directly to the actual level of crime that is reported to the police.

“Although the number of crimes recorded overall has actually risen slightly in the past year in East Hampshire, due to a change in how we record crime, coupled with increased confidence from members of the public to come forward, this does not mean the total number of crimes actually committed has risen significantly.

"Dwelling burglary and anti-social behaviour have seen a decrease in the number of offences reported in the district. East Hampshire remains a safe area in which to live and work and I’m confident that our engagement with local communities will address any concerns people may have to help them to avoid becoming a victim of crime.”

The new police community support officers, paid for by the district council, will be at the meeting.
