A YOUTH choir with the X-Factor is ready to make a big noise on the global stage after being crowned the kings of Europe.

We can win it: That is the message from confident Farnham Youth Choir (FYC) members preparing for the World Choir Games.

The outfit is ranked among the top 50 in the world with recent triumphs including a double gold medal haul at the 2019 European Choir Games in Sweden.

They will be among the favourites for glory this July in Belgium with rehearsals already well underway at Frensham Heights School.

“I think we’ve got a great choir,” said the group’s artistic director, Jo Tomlinson.

“The new intake has slipped in nicely and the sound is superb. There’s some beautiful voices and we’re all getting really excited.”

The choir will sing a total of eight songs in the children’s choir and unaccompanied sacred music categories during the finals.

The outfit is hopeful of a “supremely polished” and accomplished performance that goes beyond the music. The singers have begun “polishing up” the songs having learned all the notes and were recently given tips on acting, movement and stage presence by West End singer, Pippa Wright.

Although she’s a “little bit scared” of performing at the international event, recent FYC recruit Flora Charnock can’t wait for the big show and thinks the choir has a good chance.

“I think we can do it because the sound we make just leaves you speechless,” said the 12-year-old from Shalden.

“I joined in September and it’s been phenomenal. I’ve had lots of fun and I’ve made loads of friends.”

“We make a really pure sound,” said 15-year-old Elena Tsenkova, from Godalming, who joined the choir two years ago.

“I’m really excited about the worlds. Doing the X Factor a couple of years ago was definitely a highlight but I also love rehearsals.”

The World Choir Games is not the only big event on the FYC calendar as the Junior Choir are preparing for the Barnardo’s Youth Choral Competition Finals. The group will perform in the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank on March 9.

n You don’t have to travel to Belgium to hear FYC as the choir will perform a Cantate Domino concert in St Lawrence’s, Alton, on Saturday, March 21, from 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 in advance from www.ticketsource.co.uk or £15 on the door.
